Muang Khoun is the original capital of Xiengkhouang but during the secret war it was heavily bombed and totally destroyed. The new capital is now Phonsavan which is just minutes drive away from the stone wonder - Plain of Jars site 1. Muang Khoun is now undergoing rebuilding efforts, but there are still the French hosptial ruins, Buddhism Stupa, and Vat Phia where the whole temple was destroyed except the buddha statue.
During the secret war, the Vietnamese built the secret tunnel on top of the mountain. The local government has spend 2 million dollars to make the secret tunnel accessible to tourist. With its 1000+ steps up to the mountain where you can get a panoramic view of Phonsavan.

There are hidden mineral rich hot springs in XiengKhouang:
- 18 km east of Mouang Kham
- 51 km from Phonsavan
Both have been developed as a resort with bungalows and bathing facilities. You can sit in the stream where the hot spring water mixes the cool stream water and adjust the temperature and relax yourself with the natural surrounding forest.
There are an abundance of waterfalls in and around Phonsavan, ranging from 10km to 100km away from the city. If you want to stay in a bungalow overnight elsewhere by a waterfall, or enjoy lunch and a swim near Phonsavan, there will be a waterfall just right for you!
Explore a village and market where various items such as spoons, keychains, and other tools and jewelery are made from recycled bombs that were dropped on the region.
This stone garden was first described in print by french archaeologist Madeleine Colani in 1930. The site, also known locally as Sao Hin Tang (which means standing stone pillars), itself is as much of a mystery as the plain of jars. They maybe historically related as the stone chosen for the megaliths coincides with the material used for the jars.
Large stone discs about a metre in diameter can also be found around the area.
I'm always happy to show my guests the local life, food, and introduce you to my friends. Any questions you have about the area or a place of interest that isn't listed above, please ask me about it.
